Six FRONTLINE films and our 2012 fall preview reel won last night at the 34th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards.
Executive Producer David Fanning also received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award, in recognition of his “decades-long commitment to combining exceptional filmmaking with serious journalism, and for his unmatched dedication to coverage of the critical issues of our time,” the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said in announcing the award.
Fanning said the award was an “extraordinary honor.”
“We’ve had this astonishing commitment from public broadcasting to get the work right — to set the bar high, and to know that we have a profound obligation to the public interest,” he said in his remarks on Tuesday night.
He added: “Whether it’s pressure from politicians on the Hill, powerful corporations, or even the NFL, we have never, ever, had anyone lean in on FRONTLINE’s editorial process. It’s an amazing history of trust and editorial independence, unrivaled anywhere.”
“Last night, deeply important journalism and strong storytelling won the day,” said Raney Aronson-Rath, the series’ deputy executive producer. “We are truly honored this year to have received so many awards and to have had David Fanning recognized with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. It was a celebration of FRONTLINE’s legacy and our teams’ continued efforts to deliver incisive documentaries that never shy away from the complex stories of our time. We are so proud of all our winners and nominees.”
