Germany did a massive substitution away from Russian gas in 2022. Chart compares Sep. 2022 with the same month in previous years. Gas imports from countries other than Russia (blue) are up 130% y/y. That’s been expensive and it didn’t totally plug the hole, but it’s impressive…

Germany cut its imports of natural gas by a stunning -32% as of September 2022 versus the same month a year earlier (black). Czech Republic in the same period cut its gas imports by a shocking -83% (blue), a total shift away from gas, basically. Austria is down «only» -30% (red).
