SIPRI Military Expenditure Database
The SIPRI Military Expenditure Database contains consistent time series on the military spending of 171 countries since 1988, and of NATO member states from 1949 or from when they joined NATO. Military expenditure data by country is shown in the following formats:
- in local currency, at current prices. 1988-2013
- in US dollars, at constant (2011) prices and exchange rates, 1988-2013
- in current US dollars, converted at the exchange rate for each year (not NATO before 1988)
- as a share (%) of gross domestic product (GDP), 1988-2013
- per capita (not NATO before 1988)
- as a share of government expenditure (not NATO before 1988)
Military expenditure in local currency at current prices is presented according to both the financial year of each country and according to calendar year, calculated on the assumption that, where financial years do not correspond to calendar years, spending is distributed evenly through the year. Figures in constant (2011) and current US$, as a share of GDP and per capita are presented according to calendar year. Figures as a share of government expenditure are presented according to financial year.
SIPRI military expenditure data is based on open sources only, including a SIPRI questionnaire which is sent out annually to all countries included in the database. For some NATO member states, and for most data on then-NATO members before 1988, NATO’s annual press releases on Financial and Economic Data on NATO Defence is a key source. The collected data is processed to achieve consistent time series which are, as far as possible, in accordance with the SIPRI definition of military expenditure, detailed in the sources and methods… MORE
