Is the Middle East Heading Toward a Much Bigger War? (Prof. Fawaz Gerges)

“This is no longer an Iran war. This is a region-wide war.” Fawaz Gerges, of the London School of Economics and Political Science, explains why he believes the conflict has expanded far beyond Iran, what Israel is trying to achieve in Lebanon, and why the search for security may be driving the Middle East toward deeper instability. «As a historian of the world, I think this is the most dangerous moment in world history since the end of World War II in 1945,» warns Gerges. «I could easily imagine a scenario where the United States and China find themselves at war.»

About Deep Dish: Each week, Council President and CEO Leslie Vinjamuri speaks with thought leaders, journalists, and experts shaping global affairs. Together, they go beyond the headlines, explaining how events unfolded, why they matter, and what to watch for.

Covering Iran (US Foreign Press Association)

FOREIGN PRESS

The current Iran crisis is not a story that can be covered through a single lens. It is at once a military story, a diplomacy story, a nuclear story, a regional security story, and an energy market story. That complexity matters. One of the biggest mistakes in a fast-moving international crisis is to reduce it to one dramatic frame such as war, regime change, nuclear countdown, or regional collapse. Those labels may sound urgent, but they often flatten reality. Good foreign correspondence does the opposite. It helps the audience understand what is happening, why it matters, what is verified, and what remains uncertain.
