Freelance journalist: concept, origin and evolution

freelance ivanhoe

Our earliest written evidence for ‘freelance’ comes from Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe, in which a lord refers to his paid army of ‘free lances’.

Europe’s Populist Right (The Economist)

Edward Carr (Deputy Editor)

December 12th 2025

Think back to the presidential campaign Joe Biden (and then Kamala Harris) fought against Donald Trump. The Biden camp’s clinching argument was supposed to be that Mr Trump was a threat to democracy and the Republic. It didn’t wash: Mr Trump took back power with a bigger share of the vote than in 2016, when he beat Hillary Clinton.

I was reminded of all that in our cover package on the European populist right this week. As we report, support for the Alternative for Germany, National Rally and Reform UK is surging. In response, the very respectable leaders of Britain, France and Germany have warned of the catastrophe facing Europe. Just last week, Britain’s prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, told Zanny Minton Beddoes, The Economist’s editor-in-chief, that Reform UK was a challenge to “the very essence of who we are as a nation”. Status: Venezuelan and Surviving CECOT (FRONTLINE)

Amid Trump’s immigration crackdown, a Venezuelan family struggles to keep its legal status in “Status: Venezuela,” a new documentary from ProPublica and FRONTLINE FEATURES. For about a decade, Venezuelans have faced economic, political and social collapse. Yineska and her family fled to the U.S., arriving in 2023 with temporary legal status and hopes for a better life. But on the day President Donald Trump returned to office, he began stripping protections away.

This film is set in and around Doral, Florida, home to the largest Venezuelan diaspora in the U.S. Many residents were staunch Trump supporters because of his hard-line stance against Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s authoritarian president. But in 2025, Venezuelans became a key target of Trump’s mass deportation campaign.

His administration says it’s focusing on “the worst of the worst.” Most of those caught up in the dragnet do not have any criminal convictions in the U.S. On the front lines of the crackdown are hundreds of thousands Venezuelan families like Yineska’s who arrived between Trump’s terms in office.

“Status: Venezuelan” follows Yineska and her family as they weigh fear against hope, struggling to decide whether to fight for the life they have built or leave everything behind.

Surviving CECOT

This short documentary tells the story of three Venezuelan men who were branded by the U.S. government as Tren de Aragua gang members and deported by the Trump administration to CECOT, a prison in El Salvador notorious for its brutal conditions. All three men said they had no connection to Tren de Aragua and were not gang members.

Produced by ProPublica in collaboration with Alianza Rebelde Investiga, Cazadores de Fake News and The Texas Tribune, Surviving CECOT details what the men say they experienced inside the prison and explores the lasting trauma of the ordeal on them and their families.

‘The 0.001%’: the world’s wealthiest people (The Guardian)

Imagen

About 56,000 people control three times as much wealth as half of humanity

Cruising around on private jets, the ultra-rich are the world’s financial elite – but how many people actually occupy this exclusive wealth club? Could they all fit into a floating mega-yacht, or is the group much bigger, possibly the size of a dazzling mega-rich city?

Thanks to an inequality report out on Wednesday, we now have a snapshot of the size of the topmost layer floating above everyone else – the 0.001%.

The report estimates there are 56,000 of these zero-point-zero-zero-one-ers, and if they gathered for a party, the group would fit into the seats of a medium-sized football stadium, such as Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium or the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
