Continue leyendo →

Disinformation in the 21st Century

False statements, misdirection, half-truths and outright lies: When promoted and repeated in the echo chambers of social media, they can shape attitudes, influence policy and erode democracy. As the psychologist Daniel Kahneman has said, you can make people believe in falsehood through repetition, “because familiarity is not easily distinguished from truth.”

Disinformation and misinformation have undermined trust in our electoral systems, in vaccines and in the horrific reality of the Uvalde school shooting. They began to swirl in the immediate aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol. Intelligence officials warn that with the midterm elections approaching, there will likely be a tsunami of extremist disinformation.

To better understand the phenomenon, let’s first define our terms. Disinformation is false speech designed to deceive you. Misinformation is speech that is wrong. Disinformation is intentional; misinformation may not be.

Disinformation isn’t new — it’s been around as long as information. But, today, disinformation seems to be everywhere. With the instantaneous and mass distribution of user-generated content social media, there are no gatekeepers and no barriers to entry. Anyone can create disinformation, share it, promote it. We’re all accomplices. We’re all victims.

Planet in peril: 30 years of climate talks in six charts (Reuters)

Oxfam activists stage protest ahead of COP30 summit, in Belem

Reuters Uk, Nov 6, 2025. Oxfam activists wearing big head masks depicting world leaders stage a «Sleeping on the Job» protest to criticize the inadequacy of decisions made by the world?s largest economies in combating…

Nov 6 (Reuters) – As leaders gather for the U.N. climate summit in Brazil this month – three decades after the world’s first annual climate conference – the data charting progress in the fight against global warming tells a sobering story.

Despite years of negotiations, pledges, and summits, greenhouse gas emissions have climbed by a third since that first meeting; fossil fuel consumption continues to rise; and global temperatures are on track to breach thresholds scientists say will unleash catastrophic damage to the planet.

«Yes, some good has come out of these conventions, but not enough to ensure the promise of life on Earth,» said Juan Carlos Monterrey, Panama’s special representative for climate change, who is leading a push to streamline major environmental agreements.

International Relations Theory

This book is designed as a foundational entry point to International Relations theory. Each chapter sets out the basics of a theory whilst also applying it to a real-world event or issue, creating a lively, readable and relevant guide that will help students to see not only what theories are – but why they matter. The first section of the book covers the theories that are most commonly taught in undergraduate programmes, from realism right through to postcolonialism. The book then expands in an innovative second section to present emerging approaches and offer wider perspectives.
