The BBC and three international news agencies have released a short film calling on Israel to allow foreign journalists into Gaza.

The film, launched by the corporation with Agence France-Presse (AFP), the Associated Press (AP) and Reuters, is narrated by veteran BBC journalist David Dimbleby.

He said: «International journalists must now be allowed into Gaza to share the burden with the Palestinian reporters there so we can all bring the facts to the world.»

Foreign journalists have been banned from entering Gaza independently since Israel launched its 2023 offensive following the Hamas 7 October attacks. A small number have been taken into the Strip by Israeli troops under controlled access.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — World leaders begin convening Monday at one of the most volatile moments in the United Nations’ 80-year history, and the challenges they face are as dire as ever if not more so: unyielding wars in Gaza and Ukraine, escalating changes in the U.S. approach to the world, hungry people everywhere and technologies that are advancing faster than the understanding of how to manage them.

The United Nations itself, which emerged from World War II’s rubble on the premise that nations would work together to tackle political, social and financial issues, is in crisis itself. As Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said last week: “International cooperation is straining under pressures unseen in our lifetimes.”

Yet the annual high-level gathering at the U.N. General Assembly will bring presidents, prime ministers and monarchs from about 150 of the 193 U.N. member nations to U.N. headquarters. The secretary-general says it is an opportunity that can’t be missed — even in the most challenging of moments.

The United Nations

The 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has begun its high-level week in New York, during which representatives from all 193 UN member states, as well as the two non-member observers – Palestine and the Holy See – are expected to deliver speeches during the annual general debate.

Established in 1945 with a charter signed by 51 founding members, the UNGA functions as the primary representative body of the UN, operating on a principle of “one country, one vote”, and debating issues ranging from peace and security to development and human rights.
