«The last few days have been some of the heaviest in our lives.» Many Palestinians and former Israeli officials had hoped that Marwan Barghouti would be among those released as part of the ceasefire, but Israel refused. His son, Arab Barghouti, tells me that his father was beaten unconscious by prison guards while being transferred recently: «He was bleeding and bruised… It took him… weeks to recover.» Prison authorities deny the allegation. Barghouti was convicted in 2004 for planning attacks that killed five civilians, charges he denies. Barghouti’s son tells me he believes «the Israeli government sees in him a political threat,» and appeals to President Trump to weigh in.
