This month we hosted the second annual Big Data China virtual conference. Sean Stein, Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, delivered the keynote speech and highlighted the risks that come from not being in China. We then had 3 excellent panels: the first on the state of the Chinese economy and prospects for a rebound in growth, pathways to manage U.S.-China scholarly exchange, and the future of Chinese foreign policy. We also released two editions of our podcast China Field Notes with Scott Kennedy. 

In the first, Joerg Wuttke, one of the most influential foreign business leaders in China in the past fifty years, discussed China’s evolution over the last 40 years, the challenges of leading the EU chamber, and China’s future. Like Stein, he emphasized the risks to EU business of not being in China. In the other episode, Scott Kennedy and Ilaria Mazzocco discussed China’s evolving approach to the environment and climate with Li Shuo, Director of the new China Climate Hub at the Asia Society Policy Institute. Their discussion occurred at the tail-end of COP28. 



Finally, Senior Fellow Ilaria Mazzocco wrote a brief and participated in an event on the security and economic risks of European dependence on China in climate technology supply chains. In addition, Mazzocco and Research Associate Andrea Leonard Palazzi wrote a Critical Questions piece on Italy’s withdrawal from the Belt and Road Initiative. 

 

We have a lot in store for 2024, including reports early in the new year on prospects for U.S.-China relations, U.S.-China scholarly ties, the views and behavior of Taiwanese business, developments in Hong Kong, and the trajectory of China’s macro economy and technology innovation. So stay tuned!
