Inside Gaza – The war and its consequences | DW Documentary

Jan 23, 2024

Over 100 days of war have left tens of thousands dead and widespread destruction in Gaza. The war waged by Israel in response to the Hamas terror attacks of October 7, 2023 has divided the international community. The question now is: what comes next?

DW reporter Mohammed Al-Kahlout lives and works in the Gaza Strip. Since the war broke out, he has been filming people’s everyday lives and the suffering and devastation around him. According to the World Health Organization, only a handful of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are in any way functional, as there is no fuel for the generators and hardly any medication. According to the UN, 1.9 of the 2.3 million people living in Gaza are now displaced within the small strip of land. Mohammed is a journalist but also a victim of this war; he and his family have to constantly flee Israeli army bombardments. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), over 80 journalists have already died in the war. On the way back from filming, rockets were fired at Mohammed’s colleagues’ car. Two journalists were killed.

International endeavors to negotiate a lasting cease-fire have so far failed. One of Israel’s conditions is that Hamas, designated as a terrorist organization by many countries, must release all hostages taken to Gaza. The longer the war goes on, the greater the concern as to whether Israelis and Palestinians can ever peacefully co-exist. Palestinian politicians, Israeli pollsters, political scientists and independent experts on international law all have their say in our documentary. Which scenarios for the Gaza Strip are being discussed, and which of them are realistic?

EU defense capacities (Commissioner Thierry Breton)

The Atlantic Council’s Europe Center is delighted to host a conversation with European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton. This conversation will take place in-person on Monday, January 29 from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. ET.

Since Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, the European Union and the United States have provided steadfast support for Ukraine, delivering unprecedented and world-leading levels of military, humanitarian, and financial aid. For transatlantic partners to continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes, military support including artillery shells and defense systems will be instrumental as Ukraine’s fight for survival continues.

The EU has played an increasingly important role in Europe and Ukraine’s security. To secure the future of its defense industry production and keep up the drumbeat of support for Ukraine, the EU is also drafting new proposals in support of Europe’s defense industry and capabilities to build a stronger Europe and to bolster NATO and the transatlantic alliance.

A Journey into Far-Right Terrorism in America (The Cipher Brief)

The Cipher Brief

BOOK REVIEW: God, Guns, and Sedition: Far-Right Terrorism in America

By Bruce Hoffman and Jacob Ware/Columbia University Press

Reviewed by: Philip Mudd

The Reviewer: Philip Mudd was Deputy Director of the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center and the FBI’s national security branch. He is the author of several books including, Black Site: The CIA in the Post 9/11 World.

REVIEW —The political maelstrom leading up to, during, and after the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol centered partly on one question:  How accountable was President Trump, and how might he be held accountable?  Behind the question lay the judgment that revolutionary movements require leadership, and that this revolutionary movement, absent the President, might not have erupted into violence.

It’s not that easy, the authors of this new book might say.  Bruce Hoffman and Jacob Ware, drawing on decades of experience following terrorist groups, sketch out a half-century of right-wing extremism in America in their new book, God, Guns and Sedition: Far-Right Terrorism in America, combining detailed descriptions of militant factions and individuals along with the themes and motivations that define this history of political violence.  The roots of this problem in America go further back than many of us might remember; discounting today’s violence as a short-term eruption linked to one man, is not only simplistic but dangerous.  Without national attention, the authors argue, American democracy might stumble, or fall.
