The audacious US operation to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro came down to an intense final firefight in which US helicopters were exposed to an extraordinary level of risk as they descended into a heavily fortified compound in Caracas, according to key eyewitness videos analyzed by CNN.

CNN has reconstructed the January 3 mission, analyzing more than 50 videos and images filmed by eyewitnesses and mapping the flight paths of US helicopters to focus on those critical final moments. They unfolded at a location CNN has pinpointed as Maduro’s likely extraction point, a compound inside the military complex of Fort Tiuna.

Footage shows that in the moments leading up to the descent into this area there was fierce crossfire between American attack aircraft hovering overhead and Venezuelan air defenses.

The presidency, Trump’s making-money machine (NYT)

The editorial board is a group of opinion journalists whose views are informed by expertise, research, debate and certain longstandingvalues. It is separate from the newsroom.

President Trump has never been a man to ask what he can do for his country. In his second term, as in his first, he is instead testing the limits of what his country can do for him.

He has poured his energy and creativity into the exploitation of the presidency — into finding out just how much money people, corporations and other nations are willing to put into his pockets in hopes of bending the power of the government to the service of their interests.

A review by the editorial board relying on analyses from news organizations shows that Mr. Trump has used the office of the presidency to make at least $1.4 billion. We know this number to be an underestimate because some of his profits remain hidden from public view. And they continue to grow.

OSLO, Jan 21 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump wants to buy Greenland as he says it is the only way for the United States to secure its defence. Denmark and Greenland, an autonomous territory, refuse and say any concerns Washington has can be addressed via their existing defence agreement.
Eight nations have territory in the Arctic: Russia, the United States, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. Here is an overview of their military assets:
