María Corina Machado, 2025 Nobel peace prize

Opponent of Maduro regime receives award and praise for keeping ‘flame of democracy burning’

The Venezuelan opposition politician María Corina Machado has won the Nobel peace prize for her dogged struggle to rescue the South American country from its fate as “a brutal, authoritarian state”.

Machado, 58, a conservative often described as Venezuela’s Iron Lady, has spent the last year living in hiding after her political movement was widely believed to have beaten the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, in the July 2024 presidential election.

Silencing the coverage of Gaza (Democracy Now and Al Jazeera)

Israel Assassinates 5 Al Jazeera Journalists in Targeted Strike in Gaza

Featured Documentaries

The Silencing of Anas al-Sharif

A haunting look at the targeted killing of journalist Anas al-Sharif and the war on truth in Gaza.

This is the story of Anas al-Sharif, Al Jazeera Arabic’s correspondent in northern Gaza, who risked everything to document the war unfolding around him.

Born and raised under blockade, Anas grew up surrounded by conflict but chose not to turn away. Instead, he became a journalist, determined to show the world the human cost of war. As bombs rained down and entire neighbourhoods were erased, Anas remained on the front line, reporting with unwavering courage. He captured starvation, the destruction, and the relentless targeting of civilians and journalists alike.

But in a place where truth is dangerous, Anas became a target himself. This is the story of a man who gave his voice to Gaza until he was silenced.

Israel-Hamas Phase One Deal (The Chicago Council…)

Imagen

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs

After two years of bloodshed, an end to the war in Gaza may be in sight. Israel and Hamas yesterday agreed to a ceasefire deal that would allow for the release of the remaining Israeli hostages and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. The agreement, brokered by the United States along with Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, represents the first phase of President Donald Trump’s plan to end the conflict. Still, the pathway to a lasting peace is paved with potential roadblocks. Will Hamas agree to disarm, and will Israel pull back its forces? How will Gaza be rebuilt, and who will govern the enclave? What does this mean for the push for Palestinian statehood?

Join us for a conversation with Daniel Byman, Sanam Vakil, and Leslie Vinjamuri as they discuss these questions and more in a rapid response live stream.

US views of Ukraine, Russia and the war

On Friday, October 10 at 10:00 a.m. ET, the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center will host an event launching HarrisX’s new poll on Americans’ attitudes toward Ukraine and discussing implications for US support for Ukraine.

American public opinion on US support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression has been remarkably durable since Moscow launched its full-scale 2022 invasion. The Harvard CAPS/HarrisX poll has been closely tracking American attitudes toward Russia’s war on Ukraine. The new edition of the poll tracks Americans’ perceptions of presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin, US and global efforts to end Russia’s war, and support for continued US assistance.

Join us to dive into the poll and examine the data and its implications for future US policy on Ukraine and Russia.

New policy: In-person attendees will be required to show photo ID upon arrival, and no on-site registration will be permitted. Guests will not be admitted later than twenty minutes after the event’s start time. Registration for this event will close at 5:00 p.m. ET the day prior.
