Sabotage operations by Russia in Europe (The Economist)

The Economist

Jul 22nd 2025

IN AN INTERVIEW on July 21st, Martina Rosenberg, the head of Germany’s military counter-intelligence service, warned of a “sharp increase in cases of espionage and hybrid measures”, a reference to sabotage. That came just three days after Britain imposed sanctions on 18 Russian intelligence officers for what it described as “irresponsible, destructive and destabilising hybrid activity” around the world. A new report by Charlie Edwards and Nate Seidenstein of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), a European think-tank, reveals how Russia’s campaign of sabotage and subversion in Europe has escalated sharply since 2022—and why it might have fallen in recent months.

Starvation by genocide in Gaza (AJE)

Gaza

Mourners at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip carry the shrouded body of Palestinian Abdul Jawad al-Ghalban, 14, who died of starvation, before his burial on July 22, 2025 [AFP] v |AJE

Israeli forces have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians as they were trying to access food in Gaza since the United States- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began operations at the end of May, according to the United Nations.

“As of July 21, we have recorded 1,054 people killed in Gaza while trying to get food; 766 of them were killed in the vicinity of GHF sites and 288 near UN and other humanitarian organisations’ aid convoys,” UN human rights office spokesman Thameen Al-Kheetan told the AFP news agency on Tuesday, stating the victims had been “killed by the Israeli military”.

Media personnel

The AFP journalists union has warned that its journalists working in Gaza are at risk of dying due to hunger.

One of its 10 freelancers posted a message on social media on July 19, saying: “I don’t have the strength to work for the media. My body is thin, and I can’t work.”

The AFP news agency warned that most of its workers in the Strip do not have the physical capacity to do their jobs any longer and the situation is worsening. “Their heartbreaking calls for help are now daily,” it said.

Despite the journalists receiving a monthly salary, there is either nothing to buy or food is available only at exorbitant prices, the union said. “We risk learning of their deaths at any moment, and this is unbearable for us.

“Since AFP was founded in August 1944, we have lost journalists in conflicts. We have had wounded and prisoners in our ranks, but none of us can remember seeing a colleague die of hunger. We refuse to see them die.”

Why Great Powers Fall (Fiona Hill, NYT)

The former White House aide recently returned to her roots, advising Britain on defense and taking a role at Durham University in northeastern England. She still has her eye on global threats.

Fiona Hill holds out her hand with a pre-emptive wince. She’s shaken so many hands over the past week, congratulating graduates of Durham University, that her own is hurting. It’s an occupational hazard of being the university’s chancellor, a post she has held since 2023, but it’s one she bears cheerfully.

Presiding over Durham’s graduation exercises earlier this month held deep meaning for Ms. Hill. She grew up in Bishop Auckland, a down-at-the-heels former coal-mining town, 11 miles from Durham. Education, initially at St. Andrews University in Scotland, was her ticket out, the first step on a journey that began in 1984 when her father, a miner turned hospital porter, warned his ambitious daughter, “There’s nothing here for you, pet.”

Gaza: One woman finds her voice in journalism (DW))

Abeer Al Ghussein was born and raised in Gaza. Like many female journalists in the region, she has faced numerous setbacks in her attempts to build a journalism career.
