Democracy, Citizenship and Literacy In the US, the First Amendment prevents censoring undesirable speech with extremely few exceptions. Therefore, some look to the reception end of communications for solutions, specifically, enhancing the capability of the receiver/consumer to discern and personally filter the noxious material. Variations of media, news, information, digital and civic literacies, learned at young ages, can help in the fight against false information and ultimately distrust. But they may also lead to undue skepticism. How might new literacies fit as solutions to the current crisis in trust?
