What should the Jewish nation do at a site where barbaric crimes were committed against its people? Keep the place as it is—ugly, burned and battered, a lesson for all time that teaches us never to forget? Or scrub it clean and build afresh, trusting that Jewish memory doesn’t need harsh visual aids to remain vigilant?
A debate on these questions is taking place at the kibbutzim near the Gaza border as Israel marks three years since the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre, its horror and anger undimmed by time. On that day, Hamas terrorists flooded into Israel from Gaza—in pickup trucks and cars, on motorcycles, tractors and paragliders. They were accompanied by civilians on foot, swarming collaborators in the murders, rapes, abductions and thefts committed in Israel.
