Russia’s new partners in its war against Ukraine

Email_EC-Russia Tomorrow-10.23.2025-Russias new partners

The Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center hosts an event launching the newest report in its pathbreaking Russia Tomorrow series on Russia’s new set of partners in its war against Ukraine—China, Iran, and North Korea—and the complicated nature of Russia’s relationship with these revisionist powers.

In the newest Russia Tomorrow report, The CRINKs: Russia’s new partners in its war against Ukraine, author Angela Stent, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, examines the role of Russia’s allies in the Kremlin’s war on Ukraine and Putin’s broader goal for a “post-West” global order.

Andrew D’Anieri, associate director at the Eurasia Center, moderates a panel discussion on Russia’s evolving relationship with «the CRINK» and how the United States can best contain the group’s ambitions in Ukraine and beyond.

The 2025 special report on the world economy (IMF)

The Economist

Edward Carr

The Economist Deputy Editor

For me, a high point of our economics coverage is the annual special report on the world economy. Each year we pick a theme—in 2024 it was America’s powerhouse economy, in 2023 the dangerous economics of defending the homeland. This week we publish “Governments going broke”, an in-depth look at the looming threat posed by rich countries’ mounting debts. It is written by our economics editor, Henry Curr. He warns that the world could end up with a nasty bout of inflation.

Our cover leader picks up the theme. Rich-world public debt is already worth 110% of GDP. Barring the covid-19 pandemic, it has not been this high since the Napoleonic wars. Continue leyendo →

US bases in Latin America

What are the Latin American countries with the most US military bases?

The United States of America is a country with more than two hundred years of independent life, of which more than half have been lived under the shadow of war. Whether for territorial defense or for national interests, the truth is that US policy is one of the most questioned in recent years given its interventionist nature. Currently, the North American country is considered the largest military power in the world, having a presence in more than 100 countries through the existence of more than 800 military bases. [1] The dilemma falls on whether the presence of US troops outside US territory is a violation of the sovereignty of the receiving countries or if it is a «mutual benefit» regarding security national of both.

The first extraterritorial base of the United States is located in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. It was created during the military occupation resulting from the Spanish-American War, which began in 1898. Years later, during the period between the wars, the development of the containment theory, formulated by Nicholas Spykman, laid the foundations for the extension of the US military. to different regions of the world. The objective of this was to stop the advance of Soviet influence through the military and political presence in different countries of the periphery.
