The second Donald Trump administration assumes office at a moment of great peril for the United States. The level of armed conflict around the world has steadily grown in recent years, which in turn has increased the risk of costly U.S. military intervention.

Each year, the Center for Preventive Action (CPA) conducts CFR’s Preventive Priorities Survey (PPS) to help policymakers navigate and prioritize in an increasingly turbulent world. We could not do it without your help: back in October, we asked you which conflicts and crises you were worried about going into 2025. We compiled your suggestions, and nearly 680 foreign policy experts rated each contingency based on its likelihood of occurring and its potential impact on U.S. interests. The results are in, and the 2025 Preventive Priorities Survey is here.

Win a Reporting Trip With Me in 2025 (Nicholas Kristof)

Nicholas Kristof

If you’re a university student interested in the world, I invite you to apply for my 2025 win-a-trip contest. I’ve been holding these contests since 2006, each time taking the winner along with me on a reporting trip to cover global issues. My aim is to get more young people interested in neglected topics and writing about them.

The winner may write for The New York Times. HBO made a documentary called “Reporter” based on my 2007 win-a-trip journey to the Democratic Republic of Congo with the winners Leana Wen and Will Okun; it’s available to stream on Amazon and iTunes if you want to see what you’re getting yourself in for. The contest opens now and the entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. E.S.T. on Jan. 31, 2025.
