Democracy and the Media Challenge in the 21st Century –Center for International Media Assistance and Indiana University’s School of Global and International Studies (Dec 1, 2016)

How is the news media influencing the democratic development of countries around the world? How can the US and its allies defend the global norms of freedom of expression and access to information at a time of resurgence of autocracies? How do new technologies change the equation?

A distinguished panel of experts will tackle these vital questions at a lunchtime discussion on Capitol Hill on Thursday, December 1. We will discuss how truthful and trusted information is critical to democratic functioning, and how the growing ranks of media-owning oligarchs threaten to distort pluralism and diversity. Join us for this important conversation as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Center for International Media Assistance at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and launch a new partnership with the School of Global and International Studies (SGIS) at Indiana University, the Mark Helmke Postdoctoral Scholarship on Global Media, Development, and Democracy.

The panel will be preceded by remarks from Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA), former Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN), NED president Carl Gershman, and Indiana University SGIS Dean Lee Feinstein.
